Oh, I have so much to say about this. I could not wait to make this when I made the concept. Neither could I wait to submit this piece. I was listening to various artists and eating a few chocolate caramel balls. I did three practice runs before I chose to make it final. I drew with pencil and then lined with black pen. I coloured with pencil crayons and a marker. I'm surprised myself by how long this took start-to-finish: that being 39 minutes. Drawn on the evening of 2 August, 2014.
I have much on the story behind this piece. When I was between 14 and 15, I had this short story imagined from listening to Maroon 5's "Goodnight Goodnight" (that really is the title). My spirit emerges from the grave and tends to a woman and I imagine my orange cat Jack trying to help as well. I did try to make the cat look like Jack, but I missed some detail on his pattern. I think of a cat as a loner's best friend, ex.: me. Surely you'd feel lonely if a close friend dies. Maybe a cat would be lonely because they know they'll never see the face of the one to love them, ever again. So, the cat rests atop his owner's grave, wanting to feel like they're still together.
Also, the scribbling on the "tombstone" is deliberate as an excuse to not let a name be seen. I could've tried better on the cat's face, but again, I was eager. I would much appreciate feedback on this.
One last thing: I wish my long-dead grandfather a Happy Birthday. He died long before I was born, but I wanted to think of him for a moment. I like to think he lived a good life.
